We are summing up the results of the Community Recovery

Academy's second module "Economic Modelling, Recovery of Cities and Territories".

Four weeks of intensive work included:
4 webinars from experts of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT);
4 lectures from professors of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA);
A two-day workshop in Vinnytsia from the Mariupol team (Economic Vision).

What were the participants exploring during the training?

1. Strategy and audit of economic potential (NaUKMA programme)
Trainers Andrii Karpenko and Olha Doronina revealed the algorithm for transforming community resources into competitive advantages. Participants conducted an express audit of investment projects in the DREAM system and analysed community websites through the eyes of an investor.
2. International experience and recovery tools (webinars from MIT and global universities)
Transport sustainability: the experience of experts from MIT and the University of Hawaii in building reliable transport systems in wartime.

Cost-benefit analysis: Professor Dale Whittington (University of North Carolina) examined 17 practical issues regarding creation of a national system for evaluating recovery projects.

Shrinking cities: Professor Brent D. Ryan (MIT) presented methods for working with cities whose populations are declining, which could serve as a roadmap for many Ukrainian territories.
Revival of main streets: Jeffrey Levine (MIT) presented development strategies for small cities (25–150 thousand inhabitants).

Public-private partnership (PPP): Professor Matthew Bell (University of Maryland) explained the mechanics of interaction using real figures: a city creates the infrastructure framework (Res Publica), and business takes on the financial risks (Res Economia).

3. Offsite workshop in Vinnytsia
Over two days, 33 community representatives – heads, deputies and specialists – worked on analysing the economic potential of territories. The focus was on models for encouraging people to return and specific tools for supporting local businesses.
